• Today Is... Ground Hog Day

From Mike Dippel@954:895/1 to All on Mon Feb 2 10:12:12 2026
    The Story...
Every year on February 2nd, the ground hog comes out of his den.
If Mr. Ground Hog sees his shadow, he gets scared and goes back
to his den. This is an indication that there is two more months
    of Winter.

And this year the ones I've heard about so far, the Canadian ones
in Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Nova Scotia all said we are in for an
early spring but they mentioned that 'Phil' in Pennsylvania says it
    will be a late spring.

(Usually we say 6 more weeks of winter if he sees his shadow..)

    Mike,

Best as I can tell, Phil almost always sees his.

He *ALWAYS* sees his shadow, for all of the TV camera lights.

Yet, the National Weather Service notes that he is right "only
    about 30% of the time".

That's what happens when you live down south..

Plus winter there is like early spring here.. B)

That is what I was thinking, too. He cannot help but to see it because
they have the area so lit up!

I wonder if any of the other, less-famous (infamous?) groundhogs fare
    better in their prediction percentages?

I would usually agree but, when we get some winter, we usually get it good!

    >and my snow blower told me to FO. <grin>

Thursday night we got enough snow with wind to have me shovelling
30 to 45 cm (12 to 18") of snow for about 75 meters (240 ft) of
pathways around here.. and within an hour of me finishing that
we got new snow falling and strong enough wind to rattle the
windows and make the walls creak, so I suspect all of that work
went for nothing.. I still haven't cleared my car off over the
last few days. I don't use it frequently and it's parked about
40 meters (130 feet) from the house through snow I'll have to
shovel through to get to it as well..

Most of the paths around here are too rough to use a snow blower
on so I do it all by hand... or by shovel.. B)

Plus no place handy to park a snow blower..

They have the old saying though about March coming in like a lion
and going out like a lamb, but February is often similar with the
first 2 weeks often being some of the worst of winter but by late
in the month we get sun and above freezing temps during the day
and, as you said, it's been a Year and it can't come soon enough..

Our Wiarton Willy (Ontario) only hit about 29% accuracy as well..

The most accurate is one is Staten Island Chuck at 85%..

Woodstock (Il.) Willy rates 60% and Gertie (Peoria Il.) has managed 65%.. (Illinois has 2?.. but they are more accurate than most..)

Depends on your comparison.. As I write this it's about -28c (-18f)
and last week one night we hit -41c (-42f)..

I spent close to an hour today clearing off the car and shoveling
    snow at around -18c (0f)..

Looking forward to spring.. The snow plow came here at $100 a visit
about every third day in January..
