    Hey, question. What do you guys use to view ansi files without being logged into a board? I used to have a standalone program to view/edit ansi art but can't remember it. I think I found it when I was browsing the different tools for Mystic, but can't for the life of me find it again - it was a few years back that I found it originally.

    Also, semi-related note: syncterm or netrunner? I use syncterm but I want someone who is a netrunner fan to sell me on it, and why is it better than syncterm?

    I use the terminal, I have an app on the cli that will parse ansi and spit out utf-8 equivalent chars, so the syntax would be something like;

    cp437 cat somefile.ans

    cp437 is the app, and that will in effect run cat somefile.ans and convert the cp437 chars to utf-8.

    Syncterm FTW, Netrunner is not a patch on syncterm, seriously. There isnt nearly the fonts available in netrunner that syncterm has, syncterm also can display sixel images, and does ansi music. netrunner cant do anything near to this.

    Stick with syncterm, seriously.

    I use the build in ANSI viewer in Mystic. I guess it's more of an editor
    Also I've heard great things about Moebius.

    The only upside (well depends) I've found about Netrunner is that the fonts look smoother in larger screen modes with SDL. So, font anti aliasing is applied. This might be nice for some, but I prefer the crispy-er look without anti aliasing.

    Syncterm is a real terminal program , so that wins hands down :)

    I'll play, I think I have a couple tricks somewhere here...

    Hey, question. What do you guys use to view ansi files without being logged into a board?

    I use my Linux terminal/command line, and I doso by using an alias in my .bashrc file located in ~/:

    alias ans='iconv -f cp437 -t utf8 '

    Notice the space at that end, but after you load a terminal emulator with this alias, you just type 'ans filename.ans' and it displays correctly. Your terminal needs to be set to the correct columns, at least, but my terminals are

    sends the correct data. That up to date versions support RIP; while it isn't PERFECT, I can still get RIP graphics...

    on ... gosh, is it called anti-aliasing? Or whatever it is; even tho it isn't historically correct, *I* think it looks damn good. Sometimes I'll use Netrunner for the smoother IBM fonts.

    Just out of curiosity, what ANSI is netrunner (or other terminals) not displaying correctly?

    I would say syncterm has far more bells and whistles than netrunner too,
    from multiple font support, xbin, petscii and i believe they're working
    on RIP if they haven't added it already.

    Those are all nice things to have too, don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with having them.

    But I have to ask, if there is stuff not displaying correctly, that is in syncterm... i want to know! LOL (I know this guy who works on a terminal
    and would like to make sure it does work corrcetly :P)

    If I had to pick out of syncterm and netrunner, I'd pick syncterm, mostly because I don't like how the file transfers work in netrunner.

    While you can tweak the .INI file are turn off anti-aliasing AND set the terminal to 4:3, the way Netrunner comes stock LOOKS BEAUTIFUL - but stretches the screen to... 16:9 or whatever your screen may be.     2:3 doesn't look TOO bad - but its not pixel for pixel correct... and, while I think the fonts LOOK better when... anti-aliased??? And one other setting... but I prefer to view mine normally just the way I saw those IBM VGA, Topaz & MicroKnight fonts back in the day. IMO, Sync does that better - but I do ENJOY Netrunner at times when I want to see things in a 'new way'.

    If I had to pick out of syncterm and netrunner, I'd pick syncterm, mostly because I don't like how the file transfers work in netrunner.

    I agree here, too. Hmmm - maybe I'll do a writeup for the newbies (and us!) explaining how to use all the Netrunner .INI features - because they ARE features... I just prefer the Syncterm features. :P

    Late to the party, sorry but I use Moebius to create/edit and view ANSI files. Free, cross platform and pretty slick. The half block darwing tool it aweseome. :)
