Howdy again Deon,

So ESXi is running well on my pi's, I have a vm running so far on the first pi of 4... just debian 10 right now, thinking about what I wanna do with them still.

I notice that ESXi on the Pi is only good for 180 days, I vaguely remember a brief conversation about this some time back, but wanted to ask again... what happens after the 180 days? is everything just dead and requires a reinstall or

Officially, just get a ESXi key from VMware - they are free. It'll run as a hypervisor without the extra features (which are probably moot on a Pi anyway).

Unofficially, google search. you dont loose anything - although I havent tried this. You might find other items via a google search too ;)

Yep the key seemed to work for each of the 4 pi's running esxi, so now I have unlimited time with them I guess =)

Thanks for the heads up. Took me a while to figure my way around the vmware site to get the key but now I have it, and added to all pi's it's all gravy.

I got me another 8GB Pi coming with the Argus One case and M.2 adapter. Should be a lot neater than my current setup with USB caddy.

Now I need to sell my 3's :)

Ahh nice, I used to have a 3b but I lost that a few years back.

Oh there's an M.2 adapter? That's interesting, I assume that you can then use an NVME disk for boot? or do you still need the SD Card for booting?

There is an M.2 adapter (its a USB to SATA M.2). still much better than a stick or the SD card.

I read somewhere that the UEFI boot can be put on the USB drive now (doesnt need to be on the SD card) so I may try it out and see if I can do it. (I also recall reading from the ESXi install that the UEFI boot cannot be on the same USB device as ESXi, but I dont know if I read that incorrectly - doenst make sense to me). ESXi can boot from the SATA, so that part is OK.

BTW: I also discovered that somebody wrote a module to get expose the Pi's tempurature - but I cannot get it to install, so I may try with that as well since I see there is an ESXi build update since I installed.
